Do you remember the mountain lion who was treated with a “fish skin” bandage after sustaining severe burns in a bush fire last year? Well, this amazing bandage material has now helped another patient recover from their injuries - Charlie the sloth! Charlie sustained severe burns across his legs and body after being electrocuted when coming into contact with a power line - sadly something that is all too common for wildlife around the world today. Due to the extent and depth of Charlie’s injuries, it was clear that he would require extensive treatment and therapy to recover from them and fortunately @innovapriscillaortiz was there to help the amazing team at the @toucanrescueranch with this! The team decided to treat Charlie with a revolutionary new "bandage" first tried in Brazil - sterilised skin from a Tilapia fish - which has been recently recognised as an effective “biological band-aid”, providing the three key benefits of mechanical protection due to the scales, a reduction in pain, and faster healing as the fish skin contains up to five times more collagen than human skin. The bandage was stitched onto the healthy tissues surrounding the wound and left in place for the week-long treatment period. Charlie made an outstanding recovery and has since become the first sloth successfully treated with this unusual material! If you want to get involved with this work or know more about what wildlife rehabilitation involves, the TRR welcomes professional volunteers from a range of backgrounds and I couldn’t recommend them more highly! Go team and go Charlie 🎉 (PS - The last image here is of the mountain lion case so that you can clearly see what this bandage looks like when applied) Photo & Caption by @jungle_doctor #Wildgeography

This is Mario, the king at @lionsrock_sanctuary. He was rescued from the canned hunting industry in the last minute by @four_paws_international. Canned hunting is a trophy hunt, which is not a fair chase & lacks hunting skill. The lions are bred for slaughter & live in a very confined space that makes it easy for a trophy hunter to get the shot. I’m glad Mario got away & am glad to see him here, not on a wall. Wildgeography. The Rhino Orphanage has had a very special and unique arrival this wee

The Rhino Orphanage has had a very special and unique arrival this week in 7 day old giraffe calf “Jazz”. Jazz was found dehydrated and in a near-comatose state last week at just 2 days old after being abandoned by his mother for an unknown reason. He was taken into the orphanage and, after an assessment by Dr Pierre, had a catheter placed so he could be started immediately on TPN (intravenous feeding - often reserved for the most critical patients). He was also started on IV fluids and within a day or so was able to tentatively stand and walk around the room - making it a bit tricky for his carers when he already stands at 1.8m (6 ft) tall! Baby giraffes are notoriously difficult to get onto a bottle, not to mention require extremely labour intensive care, but as Jazz has come out of his comatose state over the past days he has also slowly taken to the bottle with the encouragement of his new best friend Hunter (despite occasionally falling asleep during feeds!). In what is possibly the cutest friendship of all time, Hunter is the teams anti-poaching and security dog, who immediately took a shining to Jazz when he arrived and has refused to leave his side ever since. Hunter even stopped eating for the first few days of Jazz’s arrival and only regained his appetite once his new friend had begun to take the bottle! With giraffe numbers dramatically declining over recent years in what’s being called a “silent extinction” - with a subspecies even being moved onto the endangered list for the first time - every individual is critical to overall conservation efforts, and Jazz is no exception. My thoughts and most sincere thanks are with this incredible team at @therhinoorphanage over the next days and weeks through Jazz’s recovery!! Photos & Caption by @jungle_doctor #Wildgeography
