‘Spring’ and ‘Autumn’ decorative plaster cartouches in the temple of Pan at Osterley Park. The temple was built in the mid eighteenth century before Robert Adam’s reworking of the main house. All four seasons are represented in similar cartouches, as well as ‘Art’ and ‘Literature’. #eighteenthcentury #eighteenthcenturyarchitecture #eighteenthcenturybuilding #eighteenthcenturytemple #temple #eighteenthcenturystyle #eighteenthcenturydesign #18thcentury #18thcenturystyle #18thcenturyarchitecture #18thcenturydesign #18thcenturybuilding #decorativeplaster #decorativeplasterwork #decorativelimeplaster #limeplaster #stucco #decorativeplasters #fourseasons

A view into the Grand Trianon. Built as a retreat for King Louis XIV, it was originally requested to be a porcelain pavilion. Architect Louis Le Vau was commissioned with the design. However, the tiles deteriorated and within fifteen years had gotten to such a point that demolition of the pavilion was ordered. Jules Hardouin Mansart was then enlisted to design the palace of red marble. This is what can be seen today. It is considered by many to be the finest estate in Versailles and a model for French architecture in the 18th century. #inspirebyarchitecture

Continuing with #museumweek themes, we’re revealing secrets (some of the Rankins’ and some of ours). As we complete our #restoration project, we’ve already started taking you #behindthescenes. This is where we started. Like so many people, the Rankins hid away their belongings, past selves and, yes, secrets in the attic. Accumulating centuries of stuff, the attic carried an average of 100 pounds/square foot, when its design only supported a little more than 30 lbs/sf. That’s a lot of stuff, and now, a lot of work! #museumweek2019 #secretsmw #secret #attic #architecturalpreservation #historicpreservation #preservationmatters #thisplacematters #buildingtechnology #colonialarchitecture #federalarchitecture #18thcenturyarchitecture #fromthecollection #cornerofmyhome #thisoldhouse #museum #housemuseum #historichome #historichousemuseum

I learnt something today... In architecture, a folly is a building constructed primarily for decoration, but suggesting through its appearance some other purpose, or of such extravagant appearance that it transcends the range of garden ornaments usually associated with the class of buildings to which it belongs. ARCHITECTURE & GARDENS | 18th, 19th & Early 20th Century Works on Paper | exhibition on view through July 12, 2019 This charming and informative land survey, dated August 15, 1779, shows a large country house surrounding a courtyard overlooking formal parterre gardens in the bottom right corner. Most of the sheet is dotted with fields, trees, old forests and newer farming, all in shades of green. A river meanders across the land and a village, with small and larger plots and gardens, fills the upper left corner. image: Lyver (French), Land Survey, 1779, ink, watercolor on paper, 7 1/2 x 9 1/2” Swipe for a detail

—————— Gülevi Safranbolu emerged as a project of living through revitalization rather than one of accommodation. The project was initiated to survive the richness and subtlety of life which flourished during the 18th century in Safranbolu which is currently inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Gül and İbrahim Canbulat acquired three neighboring Ottoman mansions named Betenler, Hacimemis and Gokculer in the early 2000s and started running these buildings following restoration. All three mansions date back to the 18th century. Damage and wear due to time and human intervention were recovered by the restoration process yet the mansions were granted their genuine architectonics. Modern facilities required for the present-day functions of these mansions were installed without distorting the authentic integrity of the Ottoman mansion. Gülevi Safranbolu offers 18th century elegant life style with no compromise on contemporary appliances. ⬇️ Visit our profile for contact information. Suggestion for a future season of @feudfx - Sarah Churchill and Sir John Vanbrugh and the building of @blenheimpalace . After much criticism and public scrutiny regarding the Brobdingnagian monument, Sarah banned Vanbrugh from the site. He later viewed the palace in secret while the Duchess was away in 1719, but when his wife visited as a member of the viewing public in 1725, Sarah refused her permission to even enter the park. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #blenheim #blenheimpalace #palace #historichouse #architecture #architecturedaily #archilovers #vanbrugh #countryhouse #18thcentury #eighteenthcentury #18thcenturyarchitecture #baroque #baroquearchitecture #design #history #historygirls #garden #view #views #latergram
