Pontederiaceae Pontederia cordata "Pickerelweed" Native - OBL Wetland Plant - Forb Emergent aquatic species that gives rise to a deep blue to purple spiked inflorescence from May to early fall, and cordate leaves either no obvious venation. Can be found in the shallow water of ditches, marshes, and wet places. Seeds provide food source to waterfowl, muskrats, and nutria. The pickerel weed is blooming in the wetlands. Luckily it's a native species! Beyond its visual allure, pickerel weed serves an important ecological purpose. The submerged portion, as with all aquatic plants, provides a habitat for the micro- and macro invertebrates that ultimately become a food source for fish, amphibians, ducks, and reptiles. Additionally, as aquatic plants die and decompose, bacteria and fungi break down the plant matter; the resulting detritus is food for many aquatic invertebrates. While some photos come out stunning, it’s inevitable that others don’t quite make the cut despite being beautiful in their own ways. These are a few from my last adventure down south that ended up having flaws for one reason or another. After going back through them I’m reminded of the abundance of life even in the smallest corners of #bigcypressnationalpreserve and the #evergladesnationalpark that managed to pop up in these duds. They’re not the prettiest photos but if you looks closely you’ll see a few critters & creeping plants🌿
