Congrats to Ryan Samples for being the first to correctly name today’s animal and to Gabriel Andrle (@gabrielandrle) for naming the correct species: the west African gaboon viper! This is by far my favorite venomous snake! It was long believed that there were two subspecies of gaboon viper, but recently they have been classified as two distinct species: the East African gaboon viper (Bitis gabonica) and the west African gaboon viper (Bitis rhinoceros). They can be distinguished by the dark triangles under their eyes (the east African having two under each eye and the west African having one) and the longer horns on the nose of the west African. The gaboon viper is one of the largest vipers, averaging around 4-5 feet and sometimes over 6 and weighing around 20 pounds or more. Like most vipers, they are ovoviviparous, giving live birth to up to 50 or 60 young. Gaboon vipers have the longest fangs of any venomous snake, growing to be more than 2 inches long. In fact, there are myths of children getting bitten and the fangs going in one side of their wrist or ankle and out the other. They also have the largest venom yield of any venomous snake, meaning they inject more venom in one single bite than any other snake. Perhaps the coolest quality about them though is their camouflage. Their colors allow them to virtually disappear on the forest floor, and they are argued to have the best camouflage out of any other snake. In my opinion, you can argue it all you want, but you have to find it first! Unlike most vipers, these snakes are docile, and very rarely bite humans. There are even reports of people accidentally stepping on them without the snake trying to bite them. It’s been said they can be handled like any nonvenomous snake, but most snake experts would advise against it. While these snakes are fairly slow and docile, they have one of the fastest striking speeds of any snake, and their venom is extremely potent. If medical attention is sought, the person’s life can usually be saved, but the bitten limb often can’t be. Gaboon vipers may be docile, but they should still be treated with respect because they are very dangerous, albeit beautiful, snakes!

Let’s change the game up a little bit! Instead of doing a closeup, there is an animal camouflaged in this photo. The first person who can find it and tell me what species of animal it is gets to pick the next animal. Message me or comment below what you think it is! You have until tonight. Day 92- Today’s animal is the Okapi. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR 10K!!! Also , I use photos that are labelled for reuse when posting. Fact 1) Okapi are the only living relative of the giraffe. Both are in the Giraffidae family, with girafffes in the Giraffa genus and okapi in the Okapia genus. Fact 2) Unlike their giraffe relatives, okapi are not found in open savannas but instead live in dense rainforest. Currently they are only found in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but in the recent past, they were also found in the Semliki forest of Uganda. Fact 3) The okapi’s tongue measures between 14 and 18 inches long. They use it to wrap around leaves on which they feed, as well as to groom themselves and their calves. The tongue of an okapi is long enough for the animal to wash its eyelids! - - - - Tags(ignore) #animal #animals #okapi #stripey #wildlifephotography #animalfacts #giraffe #facts #cute #awesome #animalkingdom

Allergic reactions are caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system to typically harmless substances in the enviroment. These reactions include red eyes, itchy rash, sneezing, runny nose, shortness of breathe or swelling (as seen in the picture). The day this picture was taken I ate a piece of 🧀. First my mouth was swoullen, the next day my eyes and at the end my nose. Thanks to the injections I got at the vet I felt better soon. #vet #veterinary #medicine #medical #med #dog #doge #doggo #shiba #shibainu #shibe #animal #animalfacts #dogsofinstagram #puppy #allergicreaction #medicalmemes #dogoftheday #medicalfacts #animalfacts #puppies #puppylove #puppiesofinstagram

The African Civet is a primarily solitary animal, only coming out under the cover of night to hunt for its food. These primarily tree-dwelling creatures are nocturnal, spending most of the daylight hours resting in the safety of trees. African Civets tend to be most active just after sunset but tend to hunt in areas that provide plenty of concealment. Despite generally being territorial, solitary creatures, the African Civet has been known to gather in groups of up to 15 members during the mating season. • • • • • #animal #animals #nature #wildlife #earth #earthunaltered #animaloftheday #animalfacts #animalfact #biology #zoology #animalencounter #wildlifephotography #animalphotography #cuteanimals #weirdanimals #funnyanimals #coolanimals #beautifulanimals #weird #freakofnature #beautifulnature #science #loveanimals #animallove #conservation #wildlifeconservation #savewildlife #conservationphotography

animalsarecooool. The #AlpineIbex (#CapraIbex), also known as the #Steinbock, #Bouquetin

The #AlpineIbex #CapraIbex), also known as the #Steinbock, #Bouquetin, or simply #Ibex, is a species of #wildgoat that lives in the mountains of the European Alps. It is a sexually dimorphic species with larger males who carry larger, curved horns. Both male and female Alpine ibexes have large, backwards-curving, horns with numerous ridges along their length. At 69 to 98 centimetres (27 to 39in), those of the males are substantially larger than those of females, which reach only 18 to 35 centimetres (7 to 13.8in) in length. The coat colour is typically brownish grey. Alpine ibex tend to live in steep, rough terrain near the snow line. They are also social, although adult males and females segregate for most of the year, coming together only to mate. During the breeding season, males fight for access to females and use their long horns in agonistic behaviours. After being extirpated from most areas by the 19th century, the Alpine ibex was successfully reintroduced to parts of its historical range. The Alpine Ibex is a mountain icon. It is represented in many official emblems throughout the Alpine range, from France to Austria like the coat of arms of the Canton of Grisons in Switzerland or logos like Pro Natura. The animal is at the center of the Goldhorn legend. This, in turn, underlies the emblem of the Laško Brewery, the largest brewery in Slovenia. . . . . #Animals #DailyAnimal #DailyAnimals #AnimalOfTheDay #DailyAnimalFeature #AnimalFacts #WildlifeFacts #AnimalsOfInstagram #WildlifeOfInstagram #AnimalPhotos #AnimalPictures #WildlifePhotos #WildlifePictures #InstaAnimals #AnimalLovers #Goat #Goats #GoatsOfInstagram #Alpine #AlpineAnimals

This guy landed on a flower next to me while I was busy looking for dung beetles. The Red Pine Longhorn Beetle (Stictoleptura rubra) larvae feeds on dead wood and tree stumps, many in coniferous, and the adults feed on nectar and pollen. More on the blog. “Both black and white rhinoceroses are actually gray. They are different not in color but in lip shape. The black rhino has a pointed upper lip, while its white relative has a squared lip. The difference in lip shape is related to the animals' diets. Black rhinos are browsers that get most of their sustenance from eating trees and bushes. They use their lips to pluck leaves and fruit from the branches. White rhinos graze on grasses, walking with their enormous heads and squared lips lowered to the ground. Hi guys! How have you been? I'm not feeling so well lately, the weather here is so unfriendly 🤧😷 But I hope you all stay healthy! 🙆 . I'm sorry there will be no new animal this week, bcause I needed to take care of christmassy things before I went home next week. So as a compensation, here's a photo of opossum's family (I really should give my animals names after this 😬). Mommy opossum baked all those Christmas cookies for her children.
