Elephants have been found to recognise themselves in a mirror, putting them in an exclusive club of self-awareness whose other members are great apes (including humans) and bottlenose dolphins. An 8ft mirror was put in the elephant enclosure at the Bronx zoo in New York and a watch kept on its three inhabitants. The first question was if they greeted their reflection as if meeting another individual - they did not make this mistake, and used the mirror to inspect themselves, for example, moving their trunks to look at the inside of their mouths. Inspecting the mirror and trying to look behind it - as did the Bronx elephants - is another indicator of self-awareness. One of the three also passed the "mark" test when painted in a place it would normally be unable to see. It touched the paint mark on its head after looking in the mirror. Diana Reiss of Columbia University in New York said that the research helped explain the society in which elephants lived: "Humans, great apes, dolphins and elephants, well known for their superior intelligence and complex social systems, are thought to possess the highest forms of empathy and altruism in the animal kingdom." . . . . . #elephantlover #elephants #animalfacts #elephant #elephant🐘 #loveelephants #animallover #saveelephants #africanelephant #elephantjunglesanctuary #bekindtoelephants #elephantjournal #wildlifesafari #animalfactory #mamaelephant #safari #photosafari #babyelephants #safariphotography #lamysafari #animalfact #elephantfamily #elephantbaby #elephantlovers #safaripark #elephantsantuary #elephanttattoo #elephantlove #africansafari #festasafari

The Bearded Tit! Despite its name, the bearded tit is neither bearded nor a tit! It actually has a moustachioed-look to its plumage and for a while it was considered a member of the parrotbill family, but now it is thought to be more closely related to larks. Bearded tits are the only British songbird to stay in reedbeds all year round. Originally they were limited by the availability of reedbeds in Britain, but thanks to newly created or expanded reedbeds, they are now more widespread and can be found in parts of eastern and southern England, Morecambe Bay in northwest England and around the Tay estuary in Scotland. . ------------------------------------------ Check me on YouTube Link is in bio ------------------------------------------ . Peacock Mantis Shrimp 🌈 Ever seen one? Diving at @atlantisdiveresorts Video by @fathomless 👈🏼me! The MOST amazing EYE! 👁 We see what we see because our eyes have three photoreceptors, red, green and blue. Our vision is good compared to dogs which have only two photoreceptors (green and blue), but is nothing compared to many birds who have four photoreceptors: ultraviolet (UV) as well as red, green and blue. Mantis shrimp vision puts everything else to shame. These marine crustaceans may be well-known for their record breaking punch (the same acceleration as a .22 calibre bullet), but they also hold the world record for the most complex visual system. They have up to 16 photoreceptors and can see UV, visible and polarised light. In fact, they are the only animals known to detect circularly polarised light, which is when the wave component of light rotates in a circular motion. They also can perceive depth with one eye and move each eye independently. It’s impossible to imagine what mantis shrimp see, but incredible to think about. #mantisshrimp #shrimp #philippines #dauin #atlantisdiveresort #scubadiving #scubadive #scubadiver #scuba #dive #diver #diving #animals #nature #animal #naturelovers #oceanlife #ocean #sea #sealife #marine #marinebiology #fact #facts #animalfacts

Follow the breadcrumbs: A glimpse into the ant species of the Western Ghats 🐜 In India, there are about 828 species of ants, of which 31% are endemic and not found anywhere else in the world. There are about 455 species from the Western Ghats alone and 656 species reported from the Himalayas. Interestingly, more endemic species of ants are found in India than those of birds, fishes, flowering plants, and mammals, with the Western Ghats and the #Himalayas harbouring most of the endemic ant species. In a recent study, researchers have studied the diversity of #ant #species from different regions of the Western Ghats. 🐜 Read more about this study on www.researchmatters.in 📸 @hs.sudhira . . . . . #ants #westernghats #india #wildkarnataka #wildlifeplanet #wildgeography #insectsofinstagram #insect #animalfacts #wildlifeofindia #researchmattersin #sciencealert #slowmotion

Electric eels live in the murky streams and ponds of the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America, feeding mainly on fish, but also amphibians and even birds and small mammals. As air-breathers, they must come to the surface frequently. They also have poor eyesight, but can emit a low-level charge, less than 10 volts, which they use like radar to navigate and locate prey. They have long, cylindrical bodies and flattened heads and are generally dark green or grayish on top with yellowish coloring underneath. Some can reach huge proportions, exceeding 8 feet in length and 44 pounds in weight. - 📸: Norbert Wu - #animals #animalfacts #funfacts #facts #nature #wildlife #memes #animalmemes #animalsofinstagram #animalswithjo #eels #electric #electriceels #eelinfo #eelfacts #eel #eelmeme #eelmemes #eelsofinstagram #electriceels #electriceelsofinstagram #electriceelmeme #electriceelmemes #electriceelfacts

This is a Takin! They’re known to be up to 7 feet long and are found mostly in the forest of China! They’re herbivores which means they snack on plants and interestingly enough they have a total of four stomachs just like Cows and Sheep! They do this bizarre thing called cud with their food. Cud is when you bring food from your stomach back up and in this case they will cud to chew their food some more! Now they aren’t big enough sometimes to reach leaves from certain trees so they will just knock down the trees! This is the Phayre Leaf Monkey! These guys are known to grow as big as 4 feet and weigh in at 16 pounds! They’re known to be found in tropical rainforests but due to human disturbance they’ve been pushed far away from certain areas causing a decline in their population rapidly! They’re known as herbivores mostly eating leaves or flowers! Their most fearsome predator is humans due to the fact that native tribes find their meat to taste well. So to put this into a short summary, as a human population we’re causing the Phayre Leaf Monkeys to decline rapidly due to us wanting their meat and their land. This is a Fossa! They’re know to be as big as 6 feet (nose to end of tail) and are most found to live in tropical forests of Madagascar! They’re carnivores that feed mostly on Lemurs (just like in the movie Madagascar)! Fossa’s have excellent climbing skills due to their sharp clawed that allow for them to grip onto trees and their tail helps them balance while passing through on the branches! When Fossa’s are close to giving birth, the mother will create a den through rock crevices, hollow tree stumps, underground holes or an old termite mound that way she and the pups are nice and cozy! Although they’re the top predator on Madagascar, they’re slowly declining in population being known as a threatened species! Day 159- Today’s animal is the Mandarin Duck. This animal was suggested by @an_animal_community. Fact 1) The native breeding area of the mandarin duck is eastern Siberia, Japan, China, and parts of North Korea, and they overwinter in southern China and Japan. But according to the citizen science website eBird, mandarin ducks have been spotted in multiple sites on the west coast of America—there's a growing population of the birds in California—and are present in Florida and a few other isolated areas. Fact 2) They’re threatened by severe habitat loss across their native range and have a global population of around 65,000 individuals. Fact 3) Female mandarin ducks are nowhere near as distinctive, and it can often be difficult to distinguish them from the closely related native female wood ducks. - Tag friends who would love this! - - If you see this from the explore page then follow me @dailyanimalfactss for more!! - - Facts from http://mentalfloss.com/article/562849/mandarin-duck-facts - - 1st photo: https://www.maxpixel.net/Mandarin-Duck-Mandarin-Ducks-Duck-Asia-Bird-2912408 2nd photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/markyharky/32284537270 3rd photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/pazzani/10370610994 - - ⚠️No copyright infringement is intended so dm me for credit if picture is yours!⚠️ - - #strangeanimals #animalshots #animalsoninstagram #animalsofig #animalsofinsta #animalsofinstagram #animals #animal #animalfacts #animalkingdom #duck #ducks #mandarinduck
