Subcomandante Marcos announced May 25 2014 that he no longer exists as such among the ranks of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), in order to make way for his new character and identity, Insurgent Subcomandante Galeano. Earlier, he had jokingly remarked: “[Subcomandante Marcos] was a motley disguise.” . He acknowledged that his previous character went from being a spokesperson to being a “distraction” for the EZLN. Marcos added: “If they allow me to define his character, then Marcos would say without hesitation that it was a motley. In constructing and maintaining Marcos’ character, we made some mistakes. As the blacksmith said, ‘the horseshoe is made by humans’.” . Hence, at 2:08 AM on May 25, 2014, at the EZLN Southeast Combat Front, he declared that the well-known Subcomandante Marcos, the self-styled “subcomandante of stainless steel”, ceased to exist: “My name is Galeano, Insurgent Subcomandante Galeano. Is anyone else called Galeano?”

Work by @richardbarnes, 2015. These items belonged to the Unabomber. Theodore John Kaczynski is an American domestic terrorist, former mathematics professor, and anarchist author. He was a mathematics prodigy, but he abandoned an academic career in 1969 to pursue a primitive lifestyle. Between 1978 and 1995, he killed three people and injured 23 others in an attempt to start a revolution by conducting a nationwide bombing campaign targeting people involved with modern technology. In conjunction, he issued a social critique opposing industrialization while advocating a nature-centered form of anarchism. He was convicted of 10 counts of transportation, mailing, and use of bombs; 3 counts of murder. He was sentenced to 8 consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. When asked if he was afraid of losing his mind in prison, Kaczynski replied: “No, what worries me is that I might in a sense adapt to this environment and come to be comfortable here and not resent it anymore. And I am afraid that as the years go by that I may forget, I may begin to lose my memories of the mountains and the woods and that's what really worries me, that I might lose those memories, and lose that sense of contact with wild nature in general. But I am not afraid they are going to break my spirit.”

Michael Stone is an ex-member of the Loyalist UDA paramilitary group in Northern Ireland, convicted of three counts of murder committed at an IRA funeral in 1988. He attacked the funeral assembly (*video link in bio*) with multiple RGD-5 grenades and gunfire from a semi-automatic pistol. He killed 3 people, including an acknowledged IRA member (Kevin Brady), and injured 60 others. After a subsequent foot chase through the cemetery grounds, with Stone throwing hand-grenades and firing at a pursuing mob, he was caught up with and overwhelmed by it. He was being beaten and there was an attempt to kidnap him in a car before the Royal Ulster Constabulary arrived on the scene and forced the crowd off of Stone (who was now semi-conscious from the beating he had sustained), and arrested him. Post-arrest, he confessed to shooting dead three other Catholics between 1984 and 1987. He claimed the victims were linked to the IRA, although it appears that they were innocent civilians. At his trial he pleaded not guilty, but refused to offer any defence. Convicted of six murders, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with sentences totalling 684 years, with a recommendation he serve at least 30 years. In 2000 he was released from prison on licence under the Good Friday Agreement. In November 2006, Stone was charged with attempted murder of Martin McGuinness and Gerry Adams, having been arrested attempting to enter the parliament buildings at Stormont while armed. His lawyer claimed that the incident was not intended to endanger the life of anyone. "It was, in fact, a piece of performance art replicating a terrorist attack", claimed Harvey. During his trial in September 2008 on 13 charges, including the attempted murder of Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness, Stone repeated that his actions were "an act of performance art". He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to a further 16 years' imprisonment. In 2013 a Court of appeal in Belfast ruled that he must spend a further 18 years in jail for the killings in Milltown cemetery.

Two years ago (Oct 1 2017), the Catalan people tried to make a referendum to declare independence from Spain. That wasn't allowed by the Spanish government, so they sent the police to withdraw the voting boxes, resulting in more than 1000 people injured. One year ago (pictured here), a police trade union wanted to make a "tribute" to the agents that took part in the repression that day. Thus, the people who wanted independence decided to organize a holiday festival the same day at the same place as a counterprotest. Second image via @lexshoots, which led to me to discover the rest of these amazing photos, and the story behind them. I’d followed the initial independence movement, but was unaware of this particular demonstration. There’s another 15 or so that I’ll either toss in the story or post at a later time.

In its first paramilitary operation, the FLNC killed two policemen. As of 2014, there have been over 10,000 attacks in Corsica. Some 40 murders have been linked to the group, whether attacks on police or politicians, or internal feuds. Separatists were also behind the assassination of Claude Érignac, the island’s top official, in 1998. The National Liberation Front of Corsica (abbreviated FLNC) is a militant group that advocates an independent state on the island of Corsica, separate from France. The organisation is primarily present in Corsica and less so on the French mainland. Typical militant acts by the FLNC were bombings aimed at public buildings, banks, tourist infrastructures, military buildings and other perceived French symbols, in addition to aggravated assault against civilians, armed bank robbery, and extortion against private enterprises through so-called "revolutionary taxes". The attacks were usually performed against buildings and the island's infrastructures, but it was also not uncommon for the FLNC to have individual people as targets (such as Claude Érignac, killed in 1998). The overwhelming majority of their attacks on the French mainland took place in or around the cities of Nice, Marseille and Avignon.
