Since it's workout Wednesday, I'm going to pick apart the lat pulldown, an effective back exercise that can be done by just about anyone, at any fitness level. Back day is my favorite day at the gym! I've had a LOT of practice mastering an effective strength training routine for this particular muscle group, so be sure to watch my video demonstration and read some important tips today. First - I can't think of a back exercise where you shouldn't always be starting with the following form: a) shoulders pulled back, b) chest popped out, c) core nice and tight, and finally d) pinching/squeezing your shoulder blades together as you execute the motion. For the lat pull down, grab the bar (there are a few different grips, I've demonstrated a wide, overhand grip), lean back slightly, and pull the bar all the way down to tap your sternum (otherwise known as your breastbone). You should be leading with your elbows which should be pointing downwards, while keeping your wrists neutral and the bar nice and close to your body, about an inch away from your face. Be sure to exhale as you contract your muscles - in this case it is when you pull the bar down. My breathing technique can be heard in this video with the sound on. Inhale as you extend your arms to return to the starting position. DO NOT SWAY BACK AND FORTH. Momentum is cheating, so don't try to be a hero and lift heavier than you can. On the contrary - do not underestimate your strength. The reps should start to get hard and "burn" with 2-5 reps left in your set if you're doing 10-15 rep sets.
