Many people find dolphin pose a challenge because it requires both strength and flexibility in the shoulders. And that’s why it’s SO GOOD for the shoulders! (Hello prep for #pincha and #headstand !!🙋🏻‍♀️🙃) . . But did you know by making small changes to your hand placement, you’re changing the rotation of the shoulders? . . Bringing the hands closer together allows the shoulders to rotate internally slightly. More internal rotation occurs when you bring the palms together. Even more if you have the plans facing up . . So what’s the difference? And which should you practice? . . ☝️Practice a variety! ☝️If you have tight shoulders you will likely find bringing the palms together makes this pose feel easier, because we have more mobility with more internally rotated shoulders . . But we have more stability when the palms are flat and the shoulders are more externally rotated. Therefore if you are very flexible in this area, build strength with the palms flat . . But again, I think variety in movement is mega important so 👊 practice in many ways 💪 . . BONUS TIP: whatever you do with the hands, keep the elbows under the shoulders. My heart always twinges anytime I see someone trying to force their body into a pose they’re not ready for. I can tell because their mouth opens, they stop breathing and their face gets red. It’s the nervous system responding with fight or flight and even though it doesn’t feel good, usually it’s the ego that keeps pressuring you to try harder because “wouldn’t it be so cool to do a crazy pose?!” The good thing about yoga is that it’s not about achieving a pose, it’s about learning to calm your mind and nervous system while your body works it’s way into unnatural shapes. It’s simulating the stress of every day life and teaching you how to relax your nervous system, close your mouth, breathe and have patience as your body works it’s way into a shape over time. The calmer your nervous system becomes, even your ego starts to quiet down and you become calmly detached from the outcome of the physical posture. Yes, there are physical benefits to executing yoga postures, but the true yoga is in the quieting of the fluctuations of the mind. In strength work, volume can get be tough to get right. 🤩⛄️🐳 Day 1️⃣4️⃣ of #CollateralPractice with @cyogalife ➡️ #ElephantTrunk or #EkaHastaBhujasana 🐳⛄️🤩 4 days in a row of arm balances, I know! Don’t worry, we have a small break coming up. In the previous ones, we worked the body sidelines individually, isolating them so we could feel their engagement and how to activate them properly. Today’s pose, though not completely symmetrical, invites both sides to work in synchronicity. The 2 main issues people tend to find are: 1. lifting the butt off the floor 2. extending the leg into a vertical line I’d say there are more people stuck in the 2nd problem, but both could solved if you improve your hip/hamstrig flexibility to the point that, the leg climbing on the arm goes all the way to the shoulder. The higher it lands, the easier both to lift and swing hips forward (hence leg aims more vertically). So, as it happens frequently in yoga, the more flexible you become, the less strength you’ll need. As you press with the palms into the floor (use a couple of blocks if arms aren’t slightly bent), pull navel in, engage hip flexors on both legs (one to squeeze on the arm even more, other to bring its thigh to the chest), lift the hips and send them forward, through the space between the arms. Besides arms, abdomen and legs, use the sides of the torso to both stabilize the pose and help you go further. As with anything else, it takes time to lift and draw the leg towards the face so, keep at it and don’t give up!! Comment below if/what issues you find here and let’s go for it!! In order to better you, one must allow themselves to be vulnerable. Vulnerable is a bad word, it does not mean you are not strong 💪. Sometimes it’s purely saying I am allowing myself to be open to what the universe has in store for me. ❤️🌱 It’s doing pose which is not flattering as you need to get better. It is just getting out of your comfort zone. While this might make uncomfortable, it’s the learning and growth that we seek to be a better person. ❤️🌱 Affirmation are great ways to starts to your morning: For me today’s affirmation: I am loved and I am loving. Coming at you with another perfectly imperfect photo for day 2 of #holidayasanas challenge. Today’s pose is #padmasana pose also known as lotus pose. Before I became consistent in my #yoga practice I was an avid runner. During my days as a runner l lost a ton of flexibility in my hips. Even though I love hip openers, it has taken me a very long time to gain this #flexibility back. Lotus pose has been one of those poses that just doesn’t seem to happen for me, even when I attempted it as a young teen. So today I give you double pigeon pose for my lotus variation. It’s been a tough week this week. Extremely tough. We’ve had really bad news, and I turned 31 (I was sad when I turned 25 so u can imagine the tears turning 32😂) - and through emotional eating and celebratory eating, I’ve eaten more calories for the last three days that I normally would. So much more calories. Actually - ALL the calories. Still keto foods thankfully, but I’m pretty much eating Jimmy Moore’s weight in food... and that’s A LOT. So instead of bailing on gym again last night, I decided to drag my overly full ass out of the house and pick up heavy things.... and besides, got to test out my new @harrisstabilitysystems belt! (Thanks @lift.moore for the amazing birthday prezzies). As well as my amazing new bose headphones (thanks @dan_armstr0ng !) And well - im pretty stoked. 90kg squat. 60kg Bench. And 140kg Rack Pulls. Flossing nerves basically means you are mobilizing or sliding nerves in different parts of the body. Sometimes a nerve becomes sensitive due to: - muscle overuse - poor posture - injury . This can result in an irritated nerve along its path leading to: pain, tingling, numbness, or even just muscle weakness. The body becomes "tight" and limited in mobility as a means to protect the nerve. . . We use nerve flossing as a technique to alleviate any neural tension by mobilizing the nerve along its entire path. The nerve is kept at a constant length and it slides/flosses back and forth through its pathway in the body. . . I recommend gentle/pain-free nerve flossing to most individuals, but it is primarily used as a supplementary technique for individuals with injury or pain. . . This includes conditions such as: - Sciatica - nerve irritation - disc herniations - piriformis syndrome etc. . . Please do not try nerve flossing if you have an injury - come get evaluated first!
