💗🌳💗 My question for today: have you lost a prized rose(s) to rose rosette? Here’s another perspective of the arbor I am replacing when it is flush with the blooms of a Climbing Old Blush rose and a Zepherine Drouhin, the slightly darker pink one growing over the arch. (Head to my IGTV to see what the space looks like now that it’s down.) Sadly the Zepherine succumbed to rose rosette, but the other rose is so vigorous that Z’s demise is not obvious...though I will miss its fragrance. I have a fun climbing addition I’ll be telling you about after the fence is back up. Stay tuned. For my recommendation, follow @reddirtramblings. Dee is our local expert on rose rosette and a brilliant gardener. Not to mention a lovely friend☺️. 🌶️ #cayennechilli plant. This one was grown from seed that I saved about 3 years ago now. I planted the seed back in early Feb, so it hasn't taken too long to get to this point. Might slow down now for winter 🥶 . . .

Horticulture staff harvested nearly 600 pounds of vegetables this week — including 100+ pounds of ‘Bright Yellow’ variety Swiss chard, pictured here — from The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company Community Garden Campus! Much of the produce is donated to local food pantries, and some is even utilized at the Garden Cafe at the Conservatory. (📷 via @lukevarv ) #franklinparkconservatory #communitygarden #gardenharvest

Going to get a little dirty today! A break in the rain and finally got some plants home to pop in the garden. From viewer left to right, the new 2019 growth and the what's left from 2018. ⠀ ⠀ Everything is pulled out and ready to plant in this area as I type. This year, changing things up a bit. I'm not worried about being Mr. Super Gardener or anything. Most are going to be starter plants, from big box stores to my local nurseries. Some seeds in between. Mixing up the beds a bit instead of "here's the tomato bed. Here's the pepper bed". It's going to be "out in that general area we'll have tomatoes, peppers, peas, marigolds, basil, cucumbers..." ⠀ ⠀ I'm not going to cram in as much. I'm thinking space and breathing room for each of the plants. A little extra compost for each one. Am I overthinking? 🤔⠀ ⠀ #verticalgarden #growingup #raisedgarden

First sprout of the season!!!Turmeric (‘olena) is a perennial that goes through a yearly three month dormancy. The medicinal rhizomes can be left in the ground to sprout over and over. The key is keeping down the weeds that have the ability to drown out the turmeric and prevent a healthy growing season. “Weeding” turmeric patches after they emerge can be arduous work here in the tropics. To make it easier, we utilize the ice cream bean leaves as mulch. Mulch prevents the weeds, adds to a healthy garden and reduces work. During this time it is fun to watch them emerge through the leaves happy and healthy! Great day everyone~ #olena #’olena #turmeric #myturmericpatch #csa #turmericformycommunity #nosprayhawaii #growsomethinggreen #urbangardenersrepublic #sustainablesprout #epicgardening #growfoodnotlawns #eatwhatyougrow #sustainableliving #permaculturedesign #naturesmedicinecabinet #pollinatorgarden #foodismedicine #thehappygardeninglife #thehappyhomesteader #iamcountryside #freshfood #perennialedibles #perennialgarden #gardenharvest #loveyourlife #foodforest #permaculturefarm #garden_styles #gardenfreak

Harvest of the day #rhubarb this cries out for a cake 😋 btw you can also use the leaves! Yes, rhubarb leaves are really poisonous 😅but can be used to make an effective, natural, chemical free insecticide. How to: Bring a pot of water to the boil ; add the leaves and stir them in; simmer for 30 minutes Once the 30 minutes are up, remove the pot from the heat and allow the mixture to cool completely. Next, pour the mixture through a strainer or sieve into a clean spray bottle . Above: Dinnerplate Dahlia ‘Arthur Hambley’ 🌸 For the first time, we planted our own Dinnerplate Dahlia tubers. They are absolutely gorgeous and we are quite happy with them. The first few that emerged from the ground got taken by slugs so we took some quick measures to resolve it. Now, the rest are growing beautifully. 🌸 On our blog, we highlighted a few important tips to starting the bulbs and increase the chances of a high yield in blooms. There is also a link to where you can buy Dinnerplate Dahlia tubers. Visit melisseandco.com and get all the details. Link in Bio👆🏻Enjoy and have a great day!💚

#butterleaflettuce #biblettuce #butterheadlettuce is sweet and buttery and tastes delicious with a light, simple vinaigrette. Its leaves are the perfect size for a lettuce wrap and the entire head is tasty. My husband loves it so much that he buys the heads that come in the fancy plastic packaging (which pains me). Absolutely thrilled to be growing this in our backyard! Just as easy to grow as any other lettuce and it is an extra special treat. #lettuce #lettucewraps #seedandsprout #gardentotable #garden #gardenharvest #maygarden #organic #organicgardening #urbangarden

Taking the bite out of nettle. I discovered we had nettle in the most unfortunate of ways…I fell on some🤕 At first, I thought I must have disturbed a nest of ground bees, it stung that bad. I seriously never thought it was a plant that was responsible for this pain…but it was. Known as Stinging Nettle (which I concur is a very apt title), this perennial is quite the Swiss Army knife of herbs—you can eat it, drink it, use it medicinally, make an incredible fertilizer & compost friend, you can even make fibers out of the stalk. But how do you do that if the darn plant bites back? Thankfully, once dried, Nettle loses its sting. That sting, by the way, is caused by a histamine that’s contained in the teeny, little hairs that cover the plant. It’s been said that jewelweed, sage or rosemary rubbed on the stung area helps ease the reaction, but I’ll be honest, mine was only eased with a good dose of Benadryl. The really goods news is that if you have nettle growing about, it means that you also have happy, rich soil because that’s what they love to grow in. Spring is a great time to go about, pinching back the plants (with gloves on!!), to encourage them to grow bushier. I’m drying up this harvest here for some tea, but you can use the leaves fresh as a swap for spinach. It’s full of all good nutritional juju like calcium, iron, chlorophyll and vitamins A & C. Come fall, collect those Nettle seeds and sprinkle them on your yummies for another great nutritional boost. Who would have thought that something with such a nasty bite, could be so nourishing? Almost happy I fell into some that day. Almost😉 What’s your favorite way to use Nettle?💚 . . . . . #mainegarden #herbgarden #nettle #gardenharvest #foraging #eatwild #organicgardening #inmygardentoday #fieldtofork #foragedfood #wildcrafting #wildfood #ediblegarden #backyardgardening #howdoesyourgardengrow #springgarden #gardenfresh #plantlove
