ed_norton. Taken during the Loy Krathong festival.
On the full moon of the 12th

Taken during the Loy Krathong festival. On the full moon of the 12th lunar month, Thailand is illuminated with millions of flickering lights, each carrying a personal wish or prayer. The annual ‘Festival of Lights’ is one of Thailand’s most important holidays and attracts visitors from across the globe. Loy Krathong literally translates as: To float a flower basket. Loy Krathong is celebrated across Thailand. In the northern areas, it is also referred to as Yee Peng. The same principles and practices apply but, as well as the launching of a krathong that floats on water, a lantern is launched into the sky. The year of this festival I attended was more reserved than normal celebrations. On the 13th of October 2016, Thailand and the world over saw the passing of the longest reigning monarch. The great and much loved King Bhumibol Adulyadej served his country and his people for over 70 years. During his time, he witnessed the change of 30 prime ministers and multiple coups. He was seen as the unifying figure, a symbol of stability during political unrest. Revered by all and seen by many as divine. The kingdom was officially in a year of mourning. Events and festivities were cancelled throughout the country to give the people time to grieve. The Loy Krathong/Yee Peng festival fell one day after the initial 30 day mourning period. It had been cancelled initially but, due to its significance and meaning, was urged to go on but toned down to show respect. Whereas normally the festival also includes firework displays and more joyous celebration, this year saw a dedication of honour, respect and gratitude towards the late King. The first image is of a thai woman who was walking in the King’s Parade. The second is of a man releasing a lantern to the sky.
