Do you feel stronger at the gym some day and weaker on others? This happens more than you think, and before you jump to conclusions like, “I’m weak, idk what’s wrong with me, I need to get it together, etc” I’d like you to consider a few points: 1. SLEEP – with less than 7-9 hours of sleep/night, your body will not perform at its regular peak. And if one night of poor sleep is repeated another 3 - 4 times in a week, then you can bet your weightlifting or running speed is going to be negatively affected. (Podcast episode #13 is all about sleep!) 2. HYDRATION – 2% dehydration can negatively affect your performance. 2-3.5 liters of water per day is how much you need to keep up normal activity levels. 3. RECOVERY – are you giving yourself that rest day we talked about before? Your muscles can be fatigued, sore, and in need of TLC – give it to them! 4. YOUR DIET – no post is complete without the mention of food. Did you eat well the day before? What was your pre workout meal? Maybe you partied the night before with some alcohol? All these factors have an effect on your performance. 5. HORMONES – ladies, PMS can lower your energy levels. HOWEVER, during your period, you may be surprised to learn that your energy levels are higher! (Podcast episode #4 has all the details on this.) All of these points and a few more can be impacting your performance. If all 5 points are happening to you at the moment, then that’s okay too! 🤣 It happens, that’s life as they say, but it’s time to work on these points one step at a time. If I truly think about it there never are “setbacks” even if I think I messed up, lost my way, did something wrong, got injured, etc. each “setback” just pushed me hard towards the goals I had for myself. Think to yourself how do you react when things don’t go your way? How do you react to your own bad decision? How do you react to failure? In all reality it is more important to react well to failure than it is to success. When you fail do you give up all together? Or do you keep moving forward? There’s no finish line. You have your journey and I have mine. Every day we get to learn something new and the best thing I’ve learned in the past 2 years is it doesn’t matter what life throws at you or what mistake you made. It matters how you choose to react! • • In my case I’ve been hitting PRs every day!!! Now I’m sitting about to go in for surgery to remove a wart on my foot and I can’t bare weight on my foot for 3 weeks. Minor yes. But still a “set back” and still wish I could be in the gym building muscle and hitting my 10k a day #neatup247 My setback is pushing me. I have more time to spend learning & resting, more time to plan & dream! How you react matters! The only way to not make any progress is to stop striving or learning altogether. Don’t give the setback the power to make that decision for you. Rest seems like a foreign concept in our North American go-go-go lifestyle. As an “achiever” it is something I’ve had to learn to force myself to do. I’ve had to rewire my thoughts to not believe I’m of no use if I’m not working, creating or being productive in some way. Even God rested on the 7th day to take the time to wonder at all He had done. Just lil Issy dropping by to wish you all a good week 😚 The past week has been super busy, emotional and physically demanding so I'm hoping starting now I can start recovering from it all. Light the Night. A first aid course. St Comboni feast day. Interviews. Sulli. Just to name a few. If I have a taxing day, I need another to recover from it. Problem with this past week is that each day was followed by another and I am still beat. I get more tired than most now but I still haven't learnt to tone it down to match. I still offer to stay back to help clean, go over when I see people need help. But all this has a huge toll and I end up in severe pain whenever I have a chance to lay down. This post is a reminder for me to be mindful of how sensitive my body is now. To take those breaks. To leave at my clocked time. To voice out when I've reached my limit. I'm still learning and it might take a really long time but I have hope that I can eventually get to a good balance of helping and looking after myself too. And I encourage you all to do the same! Stop going too far for others at the expense of your own.
