Dunalastair Estate originally belonged to the Robertson family whose clan lived in and around this area. The clan name is Donnachaidh and there is a clan society of this name. Clan Donnachaidh names include Robertson, Duncan and Reid to name but a few. The great poet chieftain, Alexander Robertson of Struan, a staunch Jacobite, lived in a house called the Hermitage which is thought to have been on the site of or near to the current (ruined) Dunalastair House. The Hermitage was destroyed by fire after the 1745 Jacobite uprising. A double tower house was built on the site in 1801 but was burned down accidentally in 1854. The present house (now a ruin) was built in the 1860s when General Sir John Macdonald, who commanded the land forces in Scotland, owned the estate. Dunalastair House was designed by Mr Heiton, a Perth-based architect, who also designed the Atholl Palace Hotel and Dunkeld railway station amongst other buildings. It was really only used as it was built to be used up until the First World War because after that the staff needed to run such a big house were no longer available."

The ruins of St Andrew's Cathedral spread across a grassy plateau overlooking the North Sea on the east side of town. Built over a long period (1160-1318) and therefore incorporating both Norman and early Gothic styles, St Andrews Cathedral was at the time the largest church in Scotland, with an internal length of 357 feet (109m). The name of the 'Eilean Donan Castle' comes from the Gaelic meaning 'Island of Donan' ('Eilean' being 'Island' and the 'Donan' believed to be named after the 6th Century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan, who was in Scotland during the later part of the 6th century AD). This Scottish castle may well be the most photographed castle in the country, and is also often called the 'most romantic castle of Scotland'. Starting at Little Vantage just off the A70, The thieves road via the Cauldstane slap has everything for a good day in the hills. This route takes in East Cairn Hill, North Esk Reservoir, Carlops, Baddinsgill Reservoir and a whole lot of history along the way including roman roads, old drove roads, battlegrounds, druids cairns and much more. Not one other person seen all day-it’s a wild and lonely part of the Pentlands. #unlockscotland #guardiantravelsnaps #travelling_scotland #uk_greatshots #scotlandsbeauty #ukpotd #igersscotland #icu_scotland #osmaps #scotland_greatshots #optoutside #scotlandisnow #ig_scotland #getoutside #ig_scot #thisisscotland #scottishcollective #visualsofscotland #visitscotland #photosofbritain #loves_scotland #scotspirit #scotlandshots #insta_scotland #hiddenscotland #bbcbritain #bbcscotlandpics #travelling_uk #travelling_scotland #mytelegraph #bestscotlandpics

A short 10 minute drive from Mill View lie the stunning beaches of Traigh Mhòr, and Garry Sands. With miles of unspoilt sand, sea stacks, sea caves, waterfalls, moorland, aquamarine seas, and a glorious coastal walk along the historic Road To Nowhere, with its links to the multinational company, Lever Brothers, this is a part of the island that you will want to take time to explore. #explorepage #adventures
