This is the all too common phenomenon that explains why I throw out half a bag of spinach each week (I AM going to eat more salad next week) and why I keep using plastic produce bags (I WILL order reusable bags tomorrow)! Just me? Not likely! . . . Despite our best intentions, behaviour change is hard. This can be especially true for eco-friendly behaviours that may not be conducive to our often fast-paced lifestyles. . . We can learn a few strategies from behavioural psychology to help us bridge the gap between our best intentions and our actual behaviour! 1. Set small goals. Changing 17 behaviours at once is really difficult! Planning to never eat meat again, eliminate all single-use plastic AND rely exclusively on low-emission transportation methods?! Good luck! (And power to you if you can do it)! Reality is that we are more likely to succeed if we change one behaviour at a time! 2. Relatedly, avoid all or nothing thinking! We are human. Don’t give up because you were not as successful as you had hoped. Celebrate your small successes and adjust your goals to set yourself up for a win. 3. Create an action plan to achieve your (realistic) goals. Sometimes planning ahead takes effort in itself but it will help you move a new behaviour from effortful from habitual! Once it is a habit then you don’t even have to think about it and you can move on to tackling that next goal!. . . We are working hard to stay cool and hydrated in this summer heat! For me, drinking enough water is the foundation of health. I can quickly feel when I haven’t been drinking enough, and I don’t really drink anything else. Here are some ideas for making water a little less boring: Pineapple + honeydew + basil Strawberries+ lime + basil Grapefruit + blueberry Cucumber + lemon + mint Raspberries + lemon Honeydew + lime + mint These are lovely enough to serve at every celebration and simple enough to make for yourself everyday. I have found that I drink the most when I fill up my 32 oz cup in the morning and refill it a few times throughout the day. I love it with ice and a straw and lemon. I am much better at filling up 2 or 3 times as opposed to filling a cup 6-8 times a day, and I drink way more water when I have a straw. What would help you drink more water? My friend showed up at the park with this 100 oz jug of water and I have been wanting one ever since. #water #waterwithlemon #waterwithfruits #waterforhealth #healthylifestyle #healthylife #watergoals #healthbasics
