Hey, let's twist again! Its already day 6 of our #ThankfulForYin challenge and today we are twisted! 💫💫💫 Twists are postures that generally involve moving the shoulder girdle to face in an opposing direction in relation to the hips. There are different twists that target the upper, middle and lower portions of the torso, all having their own unique set of health benefits. 💫It improves digestive function and a it is great detoxification. When you are in a twist, you will be essentially compressing your digestive organs - placing them under weight. This will cause a lack of circulation. When you release your twist there will be a rush or fresh blood that will flood your digestive organs. Fresh blood flow equals fresh oxygen and nutrients. Twisting will increase blood flow to the digestive organs, thus increasing their ability to function. 💫 It maintains normal spinal rotation. The muscles and other tissues that surround the spine can become stiff overtime. This will lead to a decreased range of motion, pain and discomfort that can really affect quality of life. Practicing twisting postures helps to keep the spinal muscles mobile, helping to keep you mobile as well. 💫 Twists help to reduce your back pain. It stretchrs and strengthenes the back muscles which can provide serious relief from the back pain caused by everyday life. 💫 It is a great de-sress. Twists are wonderful postures if you deal with stress or anxiety. These postures will help to open the chest, shoulders and back, all of which can help to decrease feelings of anxiousness. You will be releasing stored tension in the body as you twist, which can have a positive effect on your mental state. Children are sponges - they soak up everything they see, they copy and imitate, they are impressionable and sensitive to the wealth of input around them. ______ Working in the field of child development, I spent a long time studying the complexity of children growing up in less than ideal circumstances - poverty, disasters, war, violence and other stresses. I have to say that becoming a parent and seeing the development of my own daughter has shed new light on everything I thought I knew as a professional in the industry. Where the focus has often been on the external circumstances - living conditions, food, politics, education etc - I now place equal emphasis on the internal health of children. _____ When a baby is born, whether it’s in the slums of India or the suburbs of an affluent neighborhood, they begin a process of absorbing the energy from those around them. It should be our goal as a generation to make sure our children are exposed to love, compassion, and kindness from the very start. When their sponge is filled with love and kindness, they are most resilient to withstand the hardships they will face in our harsh world. It won’t take away the struggles, but it will make the struggles seem less daunting.

Or at least not the only thing holding you back in your forward folds. Literally “holding you back” is ALL the stuff along the back line — from your head to your toes! . . So instead of focusing on just the postures that lengthen the hamstrings, bring attention to your feet, calves, glutes, and ESPECIALLY the back and even the neck . . It’s also worthwhile to get the hip adductors (inner thighs) lithe too, because if they’re tight then your hamstrings will feel it! . . Swipe for some examples of postures that open up these areas . . Things to note: • forward bending postures need not always be done with a “straight” spine. Allow the spine to curve and use engagement of your abdominal muscles to do so; this will, over time, work to change the structure of your fascia (the stuff holding you back) and lengthen the back and neck tissues • Pick your toes up as much as you can in postures like pyramid, downward dog, and standing forward fold, to stretch the feet • Keep the leg muscles engaged in your seated postures — it’s not time to relax here. It should be as active as if you’re standing! • MOST IMPORTANT: these are just ✨examples✨ There are a ton more postures that will help. So just KEEP PRACTICING 😄 and moving daily . . Today’s been a good day! I got up and run some errands, got home and practiced yoga for almost 2 hours. Took som extra time to move slowly, being very gentle with my poor left side (I pulled a muscle on my butt last week- ouch) and I also took a couple of photos (this one). There’s something about an extended practice in the morning that really lifts my mood. I feel so much calmer and more grounded and relaxed during the day. I now just got home from a walk outside in this beautiful sunny weather and feel blessed af! What are your plans for today? @optimize.physiotherapy Loaded ankle DF ✔️ ↘️ Ankle dorsiflexion ROM is critically important in a variety of human movements including squats, lunges, walking/running, going down stairs etc. ➡️ The plate loaded ankle mobilization is a great way to provide some extra in this position. I chose the crouched position here, as it is an easy way to focus on one side at a time. 🔑 Hug the plate, and get your weight going through your knee to maximally load your ankle. When you achieve the right position, you will know (as you will feel the ankle being helped into its end range of motion). ➡️ Move in and out of end range, or simply spend time at end range. Try to maintain the arch of your foot, to prevent collapsing through the foot to compensate.
